New Projects for Engineering Firms

Below are details of  recently awarded contracts to different engineering firms.  As new projects are given out to engineering, procurement and construction firms in the petrochemical industry, we will continue to aggregate the data and post the relevant information.

1. First Phase of Imperial Oil’s Kearl Project

  • Estimated Cost: $1.5 billion
  • Operating Company: Imperial Oil
  • Engineering Firm: Fluor; awarded July 7, 2009
  • Construction Firm: Fluor; awarded July 7, 2009
Description: Infrastructure and offlease facilities for the first phase of Imperial Oil’s Kearl oil sands project, a surface mining and bitumen extraction operation located 70 kilometers northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta.

2. Ohio USA—Coal-Fired Power Plant

  • Estimated Cost: $3.25 billion
  • Operating Company: American Municipal Power-Ohio
  • Engineering Firm: Bechtel
  • Construction Firm: Bechtel
Description: 1,000-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Meigs County, Ohio. The facility will use state-of-the-art emission control equipment, making it one of the cleanest plants of its type in the country. The plant will supply power to municipal electric systems in Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, and West Virginia.

3. New Pipeline from Alaska to Canada

  • Engineering Firm: Bechtel
  • Construction Firm: Bechtel
Description: Gas mainline portion of a project that will deliver natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope to markets in Canada and the United States. The mainline project includes the pipeline and associated compressor stations from Alaska’s North Slope to Alberta, Canada. Bechtel was chosen in part because of its extensive experience designing and constructing major pipelines, including some of the worlds longest.

4. Pre-FEED Contract for CO2 Capture Plant

  • Operating Company: E.ON UK plc
  • Engineering Firm: Foster Wheeler; award July 17, 2009
Description: Pre-front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) for a post-combustion carbon dioxide (CO2) capture plant proposed as part of E.ON’s new supercritical coal-fired power station in Kent, England, UK. Foster Wheeler’s consortium partner for the project is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) of Japan.

5. PNG LNG Upstream Projects Services Contract by ExxonMobil

  • Operating Company: Esso Highlands Ltd (a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation)
  • Engineering Firm: Eos Joint Venture (an unincorporated joint venture comprising WorleyParsons and Kellogg Brown & Root)
Description: Project Services for the PNG LNG Project. The agreement commenced in March 2009 and extends to the end of 2014.The agreement, referred to as an “Enabling Agreement”, facilitates requests from Esso Highlands to provide engineering, training, in-country support services and integrated project team services for construction and project management. It maintains Eos’ engagement in the upstream component of the proposed PNG LNG development following the completion of Eos’ current FEED services contract. Services will be provided from Brisbane, Australia and a number of sites in Papua New Guinea.

6. New Jubail Export Refinery in Saudi Arabia

  • Operating Company: Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company (SATORP)
  • Engineering Firm: Technip; awarded July 10, 2009
  • Construction Firm: Technip
Description: Technip has been awarded two major lump sum turnkey contracts by the Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company* (SATORP) for two packages which are part of a grassroots refinery to be built at the Jubail industrial area in Saudi Arabia.This full-conversion refinery will have a processing capacity of 400,000 barrels per stream day of Arabian heavy crude oil. It will maximize production of diesel and jet fuels, and will also produce 700,000 tons per year (t/y) of paraxylene, 140,000 t/y of benzene and 200,000 t/y of polymer-grade propylene.

7. 800,000 Tons/Year Liquefied Natural Gas Plant in China

  • Operating Company: Ningxia Hanas Natural Gas Company Ltd
  • Engineering Firm: Technip; awarded June 22, 2009
  • Construction Firm: Technip
Description: Technip has been awarded by Ningxia Hanas Natural Gas Company Ltd, a lump sum contract for of a mid-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant to be built in Yinchuan, China.The contract covers the engineering, supply of main equipment, procurement and construction management services for facilities for natural gas pre-treatment, liquefaction, LNG storage and loading, utilities, offsites, buildings and other infrastructure.

This LNG plant will be the largest facility of its kind in China. It will have two trains with a capacity of 400,000 tons per year each, based on an Air Products liquefaction process. The LNG will be distributed to the Chinese market to help meet the growing demand for clean energy.

Technip’s operating centers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Shanghai, China will execute the contract, which is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2011.
